There are other options if coming from different areas.

Doolin Cave is located:

  • 20 minutes’ drive from the Cliffs of Moher
  • 5 minutes from Doolin on the R479 (Doolin to Fanore Road).
  • 1 hour from Shannon Airport
  • 3.5 hours from Dublin
  • 1 hour and 15 minutes from Galway City
  • 3 hours from Cork

Fly into Shannon Airport

Where possible we recommend flying to Shannon Airport, a small, modern and accessible airport, located under 65km (40 miles) from Doolin – less than an hour’s drive. For direct routes, timetables and information check out the Shannon Airport website.

Hire a Car

If you’re anxious to ‘see it all’ at your own pace, it’s best to hire a car. There are a number of hire companies located at the arrivals terminal in all Irish airports.

Top Driving Tips

  • We drive on the left, you’ll soon get the hang of it!
  • It’s mostly ‘stick-shifts’ so you can expect to pay a premium for an automatic car, particularly in high season.
  • Irish roads can be narrow, particularly along the Wild Atlantic Way, so opt for a smaller car and say no to ‘upgrades’!
  • Don’t forget your GPS! We are Lat / Long Co-ordinates: 53.0419, -9.3450

Taxi & Private Transfers

Hiring a private driver is a popular way for small groups and families to see Doolin and the Burren. Tours are built around your ideal Irish holiday and are a great way to immerse yourself in the culture and meet the people who know and love the area.

Local operators include:
Burren Tours: Sean Taxi & Minibus Service +353 (0)86 4029997
Private Drive Chauffeur: Jonathan +353 (0)87 6247805

Public Transport

If you’d prefer to sit back and let someone else do the driving, Doolin is served by a national bus service. There are other options if coming from different areas.

From Shannon Airport take the Bus Eireann Route 343 Bus to Ennis, then transfer to the Bus Eireann Route 350 which stops in Doolin Village.

From Galway take the Bus Eireann Route 350 Bus to Doolin.

From Dublin / Dublin Airport via Galway by bus take the Dublin to Galway City Link express bus to Galway City, then transfer to the Bus Eireann Route 350 Bus to Doolin. By train via Galway, take the Irish Rail Dublin Heuston to Galway City train, then transfer to the Bus Eireann Route 350 Bus to Doolin.

Once in Doolin Village you will need to get a local taxi from the village to Doolin Cave. You can alternatively walk the 5kms but beware of oncoming traffic on the narrow roads.

Check out this handy journey planner for public transport information here.

Unfortunately due to the cave structure Doolin Cave is not accessible to people with mobility issues. There are 125 steps into and out of the cave, every ten steps there is a landing and a handrail all the way down. Therefore a standard level of overall fitness is required to experience the guided tour.

  • “Unique Stalactite and Tour; Well Worth It! This was an unexpected highlight of our stay in Doolin. We went to the cave more out of curiosity than anything else but ended up feeling like it was one of the highlights of our stay in County Clare. The introductory panels in the visitor’s center provided us with good background information that set us up well for the tour. Our tour guide was excellent from start to finish”

  • “Doolin Cave, just another Cave.. No! This Cave is exceptional, It’s the first time I’ve been awe struck and really felt like an explorer. I’ve been down many caves, but this one is the only one that touched my heart and caused me to have great respect for life and our living planet. The separation between the noisy commercial rat race and the serene peaceful heartbeat of the earth is very tangible. It certainly makes me believe in the Creator of Life.. please don’t miss the opportunity, make the opportunity it’s life lasting .”

  • “Fabulous experience, very interesting and informative tour. The cave is terrific and well maintained. The nature walk is beautiful. The coffee shop serves lovely coffee and scrumptious cakes. All the staff in the complex were very pleasant, helpful and efficient”

  • “A fantastic experience. The tour takes place every hour and is carried out very professionally, personably and with a lot of humor. The descent is quite easy, but you should be prepared for numerous slightly wet and slippery steps. It is also very fresh in the cave. Therefore, dress sufficiently thickly and wear sturdy shoes. But the descent and the tour itself are breathtaking and absolutely worth the effort!”

  • “Spectacular! Cian our guide did a SUPER job. This is absolutely SPECTACULAR. I hadn’t read much about the caves so when we turned the corner and saw this amazing view – the stalactite, we were awe struck. Top spot in Clare for sure. Coffee n toastie at the coffee shop was yummy and the young ladies on duty were efficient professional and very friendly GOOD JOB!”

  • “Wow, what can I say.. I’ll keep it brief. This was an absolute hidden gem in the Burren, and the highlight of our stay! Seeing the stalactite in all its glory was amazing. We believe it’s the largest in Europe, and quite staggering to find it in the tiny village of Doolin. The tour guide (apologies, forgot your name) was very informative and friendly. The tour itself was brilliant, and such a unique experience that we will never forget”
