ABOUT Doolin Cave Pottery
A little piece of long ago

My personal recipe glazes reveal and conceal terracotta cave clay, organic material and natural oxides within the clay come to life in the intense heat of the kiln and burn through the glaze giving it depth and texture.

About Caireann

Caireann, a native of Doolin, Co. Clare, has been a professional potter for almost 20 years.

Caireann graduated from LSAD with a 1st class honour in 2005. Since then she has worked for several Irish Studio Potters as well as travelling to Berlin to progress and develop her skills working with renowned studio ceramicists there. In 2010 Caireann started Doolin Cave Pottery, utilizing the clay that fills the cave, which she discovered when she was 14 on her first expedition down to Doolin Cave long before it was open to the public.

THE PROCESS

Caireann Browne throws each piece of Doolin Cave Pottery from glacial cave clay which has been hand dug 120ft deep within the caverns of Doolin Cave in the Burren in Co. Clare. This unique clay was formed during several different Ice Ages when vast glaciers covered Ireland making it millions of years old. Upon melting, the glacial waters carved out Doolin Cave leaving behind thick deposits of clay. When Geologists analysed the clay they found pollen from flowers that predate the Ice Age and are no longer found on Earth.

The flow and drip and layering of calcite that form sculptures of stalactites influence her work. Caireann repeats these processes of dripping and layering and sense of flow through her glazing and firing techniques.
